Zone Books

Zone Books is an acclaimed non-profit publisher of academic books in visual studies, cultural history, philosophy, political theory, and related subject areas. I have been the art director for all Zone publications since 2002, designing over fifty volumes.

For ‘standard’ Zone titles, I develop the jacket design and oversee typesetting and page layout. My approach to the covers extends and expands upon the design direction established by Bruce Mau in the late 1980s: a filmic image with bold cropping, a vivid palette, and subtle typography. Each volume requires collaboration with the author, editors, and publisher to convey the sensibility of the argument in a distinctive form.

I have also designed a series on contemporary political issues and special Zone Books editions, incorporating visual attributes of the Zone style in the presentation of diverse and critical bodies of content.
